Dental Sealants for Children in Las Vegas

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings placed over deep grooves and pits where food and plaque can collect. At Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics, Dr. Bo Kwok determines whether sealants are appropriate after examining the child's teeth.

What Does Dental Sealants for Children Involve?

Sealant material flows into selected grooves, most often on chewing surfaces of back teeth, and hardens into a protective barrier. Sealants may also be considered for other teeth with anatomy that traps plaque.

Who May Benefit?

Children with newly erupted permanent molars, deep grooves, prior cavities, or other cavity-risk factors may benefit. A tooth must be evaluated to confirm that sealing it is appropriate and that another treatment is not needed.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Bo Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Evaluate

The tooth is examined for groove depth, cleanliness, eruption, and signs of decay.

Step 2

Prepare

The surface is cleaned, isolated, and conditioned so the sealant can bond.

Step 3

Place and check

Sealant is applied, hardened, and checked for coverage and bite comfort.

Potential Benefits

  • Covers grooves that can be difficult to clean
  • Adds protection to cavity-prone chewing surfaces
  • Can be checked and repaired during future visits

Limitations and Considerations

  • Does not protect every surface of a tooth
  • Can wear, chip, or come loose over time
  • Does not replace brushing, flossing, fluoride, or dietary care

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

For teeth without deep grooves or elevated risk, monitoring and preventive home care may be appropriate. If decay is already present, a filling or another treatment may be recommended instead of a sealant.

Comfort, Recovery, and Aftercare

Placement does not involve removing healthy tooth structure, but children must keep the tooth relatively dry during the procedure. The bite may feel slightly different at first; avoid picking at the sealant and continue normal brushing.

When Should You Contact Our Office?

Contact us if the bite continues to feel uneven, the sealant seems loose or missing, or the child develops pain or sensitivity. Sealants are also checked at routine visits.
