Minimally Invasive Caries Management in Las Vegas

Minimally invasive caries management uses conservative methods to slow, arrest, or manage selected areas of tooth decay while preserving healthy structure. Dr. Bo Kwok determines whether this approach is suitable after examining the child at Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics.

What Does Minimally Invasive Caries Management Involve?

This approach may include prevention, monitoring, improved home care, fluoride strategies, or silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for selected cavities. The goal and method depend on the stage, location, symptoms, and ability to restore the tooth later if needed.

Who May Benefit?

Young or anxious children, patients who need time before definitive treatment, and teeth with early or selected active lesions may benefit. SDF and other conservative methods are not appropriate for every cavity or every tooth.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Bo Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Assess

We evaluate symptoms, cavity activity, tooth structure, eruption, cooperation, and risk factors.

Step 2

Choose an approach

Dr. Kwok explains whether monitoring, preventive care, SDF, or restorative treatment is appropriate.

Step 3

Reevaluate

Follow-up checks determine whether the area is stable or needs additional or definitive treatment.

Potential Benefits

  • Can preserve healthy tooth structure in selected cases
  • May delay or reduce operative treatment for some children
  • Creates time to improve risk factors and plan future care

Limitations and Considerations

  • Does not work for every cavity and may not be definitive treatment
  • SDF permanently darkens treated decayed tooth structure
  • Close follow-up and home-care changes are still required

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

Depending on the tooth, alternatives include a filling, crown, pulp treatment, extraction, or monitoring. A conservative option should not delay treatment when pain, infection, or structural damage requires more definitive care.

Comfort, Recovery, and Aftercare

Many conservative applications involve little or no tooth removal, but taste, temporary tissue staining, or sensitivity may occur depending on the material. Follow the provided eating, brushing, and follow-up instructions.
