Pediatric dental care in Las Vegas

Nitrous Oxide for Pediatric Dentistry in Las Vegas

Nitrous oxide is an inhaled medication that may help some children feel calmer during dental care while remaining awake and responsive. Its use at Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics is considered only after Dr. Bo Kwok reviews the child's medical history, treatment, and ability to breathe through the nose.

What Does Nitrous Oxide for Pediatric Dentistry Involve?

Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nasal hood during treatment. The level is adjusted and the child is observed throughout the visit; oxygen is provided as the nitrous is discontinued.

Who May Benefit?

Children with mild anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or difficulty tolerating selected dental procedures may benefit. Nasal congestion, medical conditions, age, cooperation, and treatment complexity may make another approach more appropriate.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Bo Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Screen

We review health history, current illness, medications, previous experiences, and planned treatment.

Step 2

Administer and monitor

The child breathes through the nasal hood while the team adjusts delivery and observes response.

Step 3

Recover

Nitrous is stopped, oxygen is given, and the child is assessed before leaving the office.

Potential Benefits

  • May reduce anxiety during selected procedures
  • Allows the child to remain awake and communicate
  • Can be adjusted during the appointment

Limitations and Considerations

  • Does not work equally well for every child
  • Requires effective breathing through the nose
  • Nausea, dizziness, headache, or sleepiness can occur

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

Alternatives may include behavior guidance alone, shorter or staged visits, local anesthetic without nitrous, a different sedation plan, or treatment in another setting. The safest appropriate option depends on the child and procedure.

Follow all eating and drinking instructions provided before the visit. Afterward, the team will confirm recovery and explain supervision, activity, and food guidance based on the child's response and any other medications used.
