Space Maintainers for Children in Las Vegas

A space maintainer may hold room for a permanent tooth after a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected. Dr. Bo Kwok or Dr. Camy Kwok will evaluate dental development and available space before recommending an appliance at Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics.

What Does Space Maintainers for Children Involve?

A space maintainer is a small fixed or removable appliance designed to limit unwanted movement of neighboring teeth. Designs can include band-and-loop appliances or appliances that span multiple teeth, depending on the missing tooth and eruption pattern.

Who May Benefit?

A child who loses certain baby teeth early because of decay, injury, or extraction may benefit. Not every missing baby tooth needs an appliance; age, tooth position, crowding, eruption timing, and cooperation all matter.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Bo Kwok or Dr. Camy Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Plan

The mouth and eruption pattern are evaluated, with imaging or records when needed.

Step 2

Fit

The selected appliance is made or fitted to the child's teeth and secured or delivered.

Step 3

Monitor

Regular checks track fit, hygiene, tooth eruption, and when the appliance should be adjusted or removed.

Potential Benefits

  • Can preserve space after selected early baby-tooth loss
  • May guide the eruption pathway of a permanent tooth
  • Can limit drifting of nearby teeth

Limitations and Considerations

  • Does not guarantee that future orthodontic treatment will be unnecessary
  • Can loosen, break, trap plaque, or irritate tissue
  • Requires monitoring as the child grows and teeth erupt

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

Observation may be reasonable when the permanent tooth is close to eruption or space loss is unlikely. In other cases, orthodontic guidance or a different appliance design may be more appropriate.

Comfort, Recovery, and Aftercare

The appliance may feel unfamiliar at first. Careful brushing, avoiding foods that can pull or bend it, and attending follow-up visits help protect the teeth and appliance.

When Should You Contact Our Office?

Contact us if the appliance becomes loose, breaks, feels sharp, causes a sore, traps food that cannot be cleaned, or appears to interfere with an erupting tooth.
