Orthodontic care in Las Vegas

Gum Contouring in Las Vegas

Gum contouring reshapes selected gum tissue to improve access, symmetry, or the visible proportions of teeth. Dr. Camy Kwok evaluates gum health, tooth position, lip movement, tissue thickness, and supporting bone before recommending treatment at Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics.

What Does Gum Contouring Involve?

When excess soft tissue is removed, the procedure may also be called a gingivectomy. A soft-tissue laser or another surgical method may be used when appropriate, but the technique depends on the cause and depth of tissue involved.

Who May Benefit?

Patients with excess or uneven gum tissue, teeth that appear short because of tissue coverage, or tissue that interferes with orthodontic or restorative access may benefit. Active gum disease or underlying bone relationships may require different care.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Camy Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Evaluate proportions

We assess teeth, gums, lip movement, tissue thickness, symmetry, oral health, and supporting anatomy.

Step 2

Plan the contour

The proposed tissue change, limitations, alternatives, and expected healing are reviewed.

Step 3

Reshape and heal

The selected area is numbed and reshaped, followed by individualized healing instructions.

Potential Benefits

  • Can reveal more natural tooth surface
  • May improve gum-line symmetry
  • Can improve access for selected orthodontic or restorative procedures

Limitations and Considerations

  • Results depend on lip movement, tooth position, tissue, and bone anatomy
  • Soreness, bleeding, tissue rebound, asymmetry, or sensitivity can occur
  • Bone-related concerns may require crown lengthening or another procedure

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

Alternatives may include observation, orthodontic tooth movement, treatment of gum inflammation, crown lengthening, restorative changes, or no treatment. The cause of the appearance or access problem determines the appropriate option.

Comfort, Recovery, and Aftercare

Temporary tenderness, swelling, or sensitivity can occur. Follow instructions for brushing, rinsing, food, activity, and medication while avoiding trauma to the healing tissue.

When Should You Contact Our Office?
