Preventative dental care in Las Vegas

Custom Mouthguards in Las Vegas

A custom mouthguard is made to fit a patient's teeth and may help reduce dental injury during sports or physical activity. Dr. Camy Kwok evaluates the teeth, bite, growth, braces, and activity before recommending an appliance at Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics.

What Does Custom Mouthguards Involve?

A sports mouthguard is a removable protective appliance made from resilient material. A custom design is based on records of the mouth and can be adjusted for fit, retention, and the needs of the activity.

Who May Benefit?

Children, teens, or adults participating in contact, collision, or other activities with a risk of impact to the mouth may benefit. Patients with braces or changing teeth need an appliance designed and monitored for those conditions.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Camy Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Evaluate

We review the activity, injury risk, dental development, appliances, and fit requirements.

Step 2

Record and make

An impression or digital scan is used to create a mouthguard for the patient's anatomy.

Step 3

Fit and maintain

The appliance is checked and the patient receives instructions for wear, cleaning, storage, and replacement.

Potential Benefits

  • Can help cushion teeth and oral tissues during impact
  • Custom fit may improve retention during activity
  • Can be planned around orthodontic appliances when appropriate

Limitations and Considerations

  • Cannot prevent every dental, jaw, or head injury
  • Fit can change with growth, tooth eruption, or orthodontic movement
  • Protection depends on wearing and caring for the appliance correctly

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

Store-bought stock or boil-and-bite guards are alternatives, but fit and suitability vary. Sport-specific face protection may also be appropriate and does not necessarily replace a mouthguard.

Comfort, Recovery, and Aftercare

A new guard should feel secure without causing sores or interfering excessively with breathing. Rinse after use, clean as directed, allow it to dry, store it in a ventilated case, and keep it away from heat and pets.

When Should You Contact Our Office?

Contact us if the guard becomes loose, tight, torn, distorted, sharp, or uncomfortable, or if teeth move or braces change. Seek prompt evaluation after a dental injury even when a mouthguard was worn.
