Preventative dental care in Las Vegas

Custom Nightguards in Las Vegas

A custom nightguard is a removable appliance that may protect teeth from wear associated with nighttime clenching or grinding. Dr. Camy Kwok evaluates symptoms, the bite, tooth development, and possible contributing factors before recommending one at Avocabo Dental & Orthodontics.

What Does Custom Nightguards Involve?

A nightguard is made from an impression or digital scan and fits over selected teeth to create a protective biting surface. It manages tooth contact but does not diagnose or cure every cause of grinding, headaches, jaw discomfort, or sleep concerns.

Who May Benefit?

Selected children, teens, or adults with clinical signs of wear, fractured restorations, or symptoms associated with clenching or grinding may benefit. Growth, active orthodontic treatment, jaw symptoms, and sleep-related concerns affect suitability.

An in-person evaluation is required before Dr. Camy Kwok can recommend care for an individual patient.

What Can Patients Expect?

Step 1

Evaluate

We assess teeth, wear patterns, jaw comfort, bite, growth, appliances, and relevant health history.

Step 2

Create

Records of the teeth are used to make an appliance for the planned arch and bite relationship.

Step 3

Fit and review

The guard is adjusted, care is explained, and follow-up checks monitor fit and symptoms.

Potential Benefits

  • May reduce direct wear from tooth-to-tooth contact
  • Custom fit can improve retention and distribute biting forces
  • Provides a removable option that can be monitored and adjusted

Limitations and Considerations

  • Does not stop every grinding episode or treat all underlying causes
  • Fit may change with growth or orthodontic movement
  • Can wear, crack, become lost, or require adjustment

What Alternatives May Be Considered?

Depending on findings, alternatives may include monitoring, addressing habits or stress, dental restoration, orthodontic care, medical or sleep evaluation, or a different appliance. A nightguard should not be used to self-treat suspected sleep apnea.

Comfort, Recovery, and Aftercare

An adjustment period is common. Clean the guard as directed, store it dry in its case, avoid heat, and bring it to follow-up visits; stop wearing it and contact us if it causes pain or changes the bite.

When Should You Contact Our Office?

Contact the office for worsening jaw pain, headaches, tooth sensitivity, a damaged or poorly fitting guard, or a bite that feels changed. Breathing pauses, gasping, or significant sleep concerns require medical evaluation.
