Braces vs Clear Aligners: How Do You Choose?
Neither treatment is inherently better or faster. The appropriate choice depends on the patient and the movements required, and Dr. Camy Kwok will walk through both options during your evaluation.
What Braces Do Well
Fixed brackets and wires can allow greater predictability and control for certain movements, severe rotations, and cases requiring substantial space closure. Because braces are fixed, they do not depend on the patient remembering to wear an appliance.
What Clear Aligners Do Well
Removable trays fit a lifestyle that favors removability, support reliable compliance, and can be attractive when oral hygiene or periodontal condition favors taking the appliance out to clean. Milder cases and appropriate Class II correction in a compliant patient may also be well suited to aligners.
Where Aligners May Be Less Predictable
Severe rotations and cases requiring substantial space closure are movements where aligner mechanics may be less predictable, and case mechanics may otherwise favor fixed appliances.
Why Compliance Matters
Compliance is extremely important for aligners, since they only move teeth as planned when worn as prescribed. When aligner compliance is doubtful, braces may be the more predictable choice.
Oral Hygiene and Periodontal Considerations
When oral hygiene considerations or periodontal condition make it attractive to remove an appliance for cleaning, removable aligners may be appropriate.
Which Is Faster?
Either option can be faster in a particular case depending on the movements required, the bite, the treatment goals, biological response, and patient cooperation.
What About Children, Teens, and Adults?
Children, teens, and adults are evaluated individually. Age alone does not determine appliance choice.
Can Braces and Aligners Be Combined?
Avocabo may combine braces and aligners if the case requires it.
What If I Only Want Clear Aligners?
Your preference matters, but so does what your treatment requires.
If you strongly prefer aligners, Dr. Camy will explore whether that option can reasonably accomplish the treatment goals, and explain alternatives when it cannot.
How Dr. Camy Makes the Recommendation
After an in-person evaluation of your metal braces and clear aligner options, Dr. Camy weighs the movements required, your bite, compliance, hygiene, and your preferences to recommend an approach for your specific case.
